Millennial Women See Themselves As Style Icons

Every generation has their own set of icons and sartorial stars. Over the past few decades, the runways and red carpets have been filled with stylish women showcasing their personal style, creativity, and talent for mixing and matching looks to become fashion icons. As part of the POPSUGAR Future of Retail Experiences study, we asked millennial women to tell us, via an open-ended question, the person they consider to be their personal fashion or style icon.

Responses ranged from style mavens of yesteryear with a timeless and iconic look (Audrey Hepburn) to women who have been famous for decades and whose style continues to evolve and improve (Jennifer Aniston, Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez) to women who are dominating the runways and award show red carpets today (Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Selena Gomez). But there was one icon who dominated this list, receiving nearly two times the number of individual mentions as any celebrity from any time period. The person that millennial women consider to be their fashion or style icon is themselves.

In our research, we learned that millennials are influenced by a number of different sources when it comes to their fashion and style choices, from celebrities and fashion experts to bloggers, Instagrammers, and even brands, but at the end of the day it's themselves who make the final decision about how to mix and match influences and styles to create a personalized look. Therefore, while others take on the role of curating the many different available styles, it's the millennial woman herself who takes these and shapes them into the way she presents herself to the world, and thus she is her own personal fashion and style icon.
