Fashion icon Bo Derek once said, "Whoever said that money can't buy happiness simply didn't know where to go shopping." The women we surveyed as part of the POPSUGAR Insights Q3 retail-apparel study would tend to agree. We asked women to share which products they spend the most on and how much they typically spend per calendar year on each of the following apparel categories.
Overall, shoes rule. Twenty-seven percent of women said they spend the most per year on shoes, followed by dresses (15%), blouses (13%), handbags (12%), and pants (10%). Jewelry (6%), activewear (6%), outerwear (4%), and intimates (4%) are specific apparel products that women purchase throughout the year but purchase with less ferocity than shoes or dresses.
In terms of apparel-category spending, 70% of women spend over $300 per year on clothes, with 44% admitting that they spend over $500 per year. When it comes to shoes, nearly 90% of women spend over $100 per year on shoes, with 45% spending between $100 and $300 per year and 44% spending over $300 per year. Finally, when considering accessories, 69% of women spend over $100 per year on accessories, with 42% spending between $100 and $300 and 27% spending over $300.
