As part of the POPSUGAR Insights Q3 retail-apparel study, we asked women to break down where they typically purchase apparel and accessories. The options included brick-and-mortar stores, retailer websites, and retailer mobile applications, and women were allowed to choose all the locations where they purchase clothes, shoes, or accessories.
Overall, 69% of women said that they typically purchase apparel and accessories at department-store brick-and-mortar locations, followed by 60% of women who said they purchase at brand-name retailers (such as Gap, J.Crew, etc.) and 47% of women who purchase clothes at a discount fashion store.
Department stores also lead for online shopping and purchasing. Forty-seven percent of women choose to purchase apparel and accessories at a department-store website, more than the 40% who said they purchase at an online retailer.
Big-box retail stores (38%) and big-box retail websites (14%) are less popular purchase destinations than online retailers, which 40% of women selected as the place they purchase clothing. Finally, only 7% of women said that they purchase apparel or accessories from a brand-name store's mobile application.
